and Honoring Local Heroes
   

Starting in 1993, each year, we encourage agencies and individuals to acknowledge the work of those who have touched their life and others through their advocacy, dedication, and effort to make a difference in human services in one or more of the award categories: " Outstanding Organization/Program " Excellence in Advocacy " Innovative Program " Stewardship " The Ron Chisom Anti Racism Award (new in 2007) In addition to these five awards, one SHSC member coalition is requested to provide the name of an individual or program to be the recipient of the City of Seattle Mayor's Award.

Mayor's Award & Proclamation: The African American Elders Program identifies chronically ill, low income African American seniors and assists them in accessing and receiving needed social and health services through ongoing case management, support and referrals.
 
Outstanding Organization Award: International Community Health Services (ICHS) is the largest Asian, Native Hawaiian, an Pacific Islander community health care center in Washington State. Aside from providing medical, dental, behavioral health, health education and community outreach, ICHS operates in over 50 languages and is dedicated to providing the services needed to overcome language and cultural barriers.
 
Innovative Program Award: Open Arms Perinatal Services is dedicated to addressing health disparities among low income mothers by providing services that support, educate, honor and empower women and their families throughout the childbearing year.
 
Excellence in Advocacy: Pastor Richard Gamble is a longtime leader in the advocacy community and for several years has worked as the founding member and organizer for the Faithful Action in Transforming Homelessness group. His compassion and dedication to ending homelessness through education, policy advocacy and community engagement has been a strong asset within our community.

 

Stewardship Award: The African American Child Care Task Force (AACCTF) has been working together for over 20 years addressing the root causes of the Cradle to Prison Pipeline, studying inter-generational poverty and the disproportionate incarceration of African Americans throughout King County. The Task Force has brought forth vital information to the public which has led to local and county wide efforts and investments to address poverty and the well being of all children of color.
 
The Ron Chisom Anti-Racism Award: El Centro de la Raza has been a voice and hub for our Latino community for over 37 years. El Centro de la Raza strives to use social, cultural, educational, economic and civic activities as vehicles to bring together peoples of all races. Through their comprehensive programs and services, they empower members of the Latino community by combining a strong sense of self-worth and connectedness to one's family and culture with active participation in community affairs.
